Denim on Denim Redux

Trends come and go, but I think the button down skirt is here to stay for me. It’s funny how things go in and out of fashion. If you would have said to me 5 years ago I’d be slipping myself back into denim skirts in 2016, I would have said you were crazy. Low and behold: me, in a denim skirt, loving life.

Granted, this rendition is much more refined than the super short, frayed, Abercrombie and Fitch mini skirts of yesteryear. This style is undoubtedly ’60s and oh-so polished. I wanted to try giving the illusion of a denim, A-line dress, so I let a lighter chambray top hang out over the skirt instead of tucking it in. Cute right? It’s fun to experiment with different ways to wear pieces I’ve worn a million times! The rest of the outfit is pretty self explanatory. White accessories, because they are my favorite, and a pink scarf, because my scarf obsession is real, and a round of applause for kind of looking like a super casual flight attendant 🙂 read more

Something about this outfit feels part art teacher, part French student. For those of you who don’t know, I studied at the Sorbonne in Paris in 2008. If you’re a regular reader, this is old news. But for those of you who are reading my site for the first time, my love for France runs deep. I fell in love with the country when I studied French and Journalism abroad in Paris back in college. I had the privilege of living in the most beautiful Maison in the left bank – on a quaint street in the 5th called Rue Amyo right behind the Pantheon. I’m often reminded by my days in Paris. I have a gorgeous, old map of the city hanging in the living room that I bought at a yard sale across the street from my old apartment for a measly $30, that turned out to be the best $30 I’ve ever spent. I love French directors, like Goddard, and French foods, like croissants, and wine, and cheese (which according to my doctor I am no longer able to have.) France in the 1920s is my favorite decade of choice — Ernest Hemingway (my fav) and the rest of the greats roamed the streets drinking wine and writing literary magic… read more

I have been traveling so much lately – both for work and pleasure – and find myself drawing inspiration from all of the places I’ve visited. Most recently, I hosted the ULTA beauty convention in Orlando, Florida, which was one of the craziest things I’ve ever done! My duties as emcee for ULTA included getting up on a ginormous stage about 8 times a day to entertain the 2,600 person audience… not an easy fete, especially when the crowd is comprised mainly of women. Even though I was a bit nervous, it was such a cool and rewarding experience, and it seemed like everyone enjoyed my half-funny jokes 😉 As a TV host, I’ve done shows like ABC’s On the Red Carpet at the Oscars or the TODAY Show where millions of people are watching… but you don’t see all of those people staring right back at you! Which is why hosting a live, in-person event was one of the toughest things I’ve done to date! But of course, I’m so glad I did it.  read more

I couldn’t help but feel a bit French in this dress, don’t you agree? Like many, I’m a sucker for stripes — I seriously think I could be happy wearing a striped piece everyday of the week. The thing that drew me to this particular dress is the cut. After all, a draw string waist is a surefire way to be comfortable all day, and a floaty hem is flirty and flattering. I’ve mentioned this on my blog before, but I studied abroad in Paris back in 2008 and still cite France as my favorite country. Paris was the first European city I really got to explore and call home. Funny enough, I didn’t see a SINGLE person wearing stripes there… Just a little food for fashion thought. read more

Dressed Up, With Kicks

On the days that I can’t find anything to wear, I rely on a good, all-black outfit. This skirt has to be one of my favorite skirts that I own, because I love the way I can dress it up or down. I’ve styled it with everything from denim to a tee shirt, and here, I decided to go for a soft, silk button up. I wanted an outfit that was polished enough for a slew of work events, but comfy enough to last all night.

So… converse! By now you know that sneakers are totally acceptable among the fashion set, and I love this trend, which ramped up about 4 years ago when athleisure took off. In fact, sneakers should no longer be called a trend and more a way of life, an essential in any closet. I adore the way a pair of sneakers can add a laid-back sensibility to even the dressiest outfits, without looking out of place. read more
