The white button down is easily my top of choice. I grew up wearing them for school every day, and they’ve become a second a skin – a uniform, if you will. And while I don’t go to Steve Jobs lengths to wear the same look everyday, I do welcome the familiarity and nostalgia that come with wearing a crisp, white oxford.
I also enjoy the button up in just about any form it takes on: oversized, fitted, darted, and in this case, a dress. I’ve worn this white button down dress countless times, typically during the summer or on vacation with flats and a wide brim fedora. Here, I challenged myself a bit, and took on the task of making the shirt dress work as a top.
In my mind, I fancy the idea of wearing this shirt dress fully buttoned, a la something you’d see at Phillip Lim or ALC. Unfortunately, when I tried it – I looked like a white potato sack. The key to making this work is a hint of midriff. I kept only the top few buttons done, and let the other ones hang free, letting just a tiny sliver of skin show.
Underneath, a polka dot midi skirt with knife pleats mixed with leopard loafers adds fun pattern play. The final touches? A red bag, a little black lace bra, and clear shades.
How do you wear your button down? Would you try this look? Let me know in the comments! xx
